Macy Downs doesn’t just compete, she carries something deeper with her every time she steps onto the court or field.
A junior at Taylor High School, Downs is a three-sport athlete competing in volleyball, basketball, and softball. But beyond the stats and wins, what defines her most is a mindset rooted in discipline, faith, and a relentless drive to improve.
“The thing that motivates me the most is that I hate losing more than I love winning; however, I also have the desire to constantly improve myself, so I never let my coach, team, or fans down.”
That mindset helped power a historic basketball season for Taylor. Downs played a key role in leading her team to an undefeated run through conference and regional play, an accomplishment unmatched in the program’s history for more than three decades, if ever.
But for Downs, some of the most meaningful moments aren’t measured by banners or records.
“The main highlight from last season was becoming undefeated conference and regional champions, which hadn’t been done in over 30 years–if ever–at Taylor in the girls’ basketball program. Another highlight from this past season was a personal one for me. On December 5th, we beat Arkansas High with my grandmother in attendance. It was the first basketball game that she had ever watched in person, which was super special to me.”
Faith plays a central role in how Downs approaches both competition and life. It shapes her perspective, fuels her resilience, and guides how she carries herself as a teammate and leader.
“The biggest influences in my life are Jesus Christ, my parents, and my paternal grandmother. The Lord is the biggest role model in my life because He is the one and only perfect person who has ever walked this earth. I try my best to live my life and play the game in a way that others can see His light through me.”
That foundation becomes especially important in difficult moments, when games tighten, and pressure builds.
“The main thing that keeps me going, even when my back is against the wall, is my faith. When things get tough, I know that Jesus is right beside me no matter what. He has also given me family and close friends who will be there, supporting and encouraging me through it all.”
Downs also takes immense pride in representing Taylor, a program and community she has grown alongside since her early playing days.
“It means the world to me to wear ‘Taylor’ across my chest, and I wear it with pride because of what the school stands for. I love wearing it alongside many of the same teammates I started my basketball career with in 7th grade.”
Behind the scenes, she credits her development to both her coaching staff and her family, two pillars that have shaped her journey as an athlete and person.
“Coach Graves has played a major role in my development as a player. He has helped me in every aspect of the game, from the physical side to the mental side. Through his actions, he shows that he is fully committed to the program and genuinely cares about each of his players, as athletes and people.”
“My family has been the one constant in my life, both in and out of sports. They have made countless sacrifices to support me… I’ve never played a game, not even before high school, without at least one family member in the stands cheering for me.”
As Downs looks ahead to her senior year, her goals remain grounded in the same principles that have carried her this far, faith, effort, and a commitment to something bigger than herself. Whether it’s on the volleyball court, basketball floor, or softball field, she continues to represent Taylor with pride, purpose, and an unshakable drive to be better than she was the day before.
